October Revolution........ A little too late perhaps!

The "holier than thou" attitude of democracy is absolutely unpardonable. Winston Churchill once said " Democracy is not the best form of government but I will stick by it until I find a better form" and this attitude clearly represents the pomp with which democratic countries conduct themselves.

Was reading this article in the New Yorker about Noah Webster. Apparently inspite of his reputation as a highly educated man, Noah Webster strongly opposed granting voting rights to everybody. He seemed to think that only selected members of society should be granted the right to vote. Granting the right to everybody would mean demeaning the right itself

Ridiculous as it might sound, I mildly agree. The right to vote is just one of many others. If there is any argument to support the fact that everybody has equal voting rights, that argument can be further extended to justify equal property for everybody which is the thesis of communism. So we have reached a contradiction, or have we?

What we have is an exposure of the fallacy of giving equal voting rights to everybody. Let me explain. Consider the capitalist mindset that you dont share your riches with anybody and what you earn is just yours because YOU worked hard for it. Now draw a parallel with a plutarchy or aristocracy where only nobles or wise men or rich people have the right to vote. One can always argue that these people EARNED the right to vote and the others have not. So we have justified an aristocracy! What is so sacred about the right to vote that it is the only thing we want to equate across the board. It doesn't matter if you are poor or dont have an education, but you have the right to vote. That is a sorry attitude.

Frankly, I feel communism is the only political theory which can really be justified. It uses the simple logic that we are all born equal and all the resources we have should be equally shared. But the tragedy is that it doesn't work in practice. And I attribute that to two reasons

1) The whole problem of solving the problems of people is intractable. What I mean is that.......... the typical way to do it is to have representatives but that is a contradiction which plagues both democracy and communism. The very fact that some person is a representative places him at a different stratum from the others and defeats the original axiom that all humans are equal. So democracy is out. In communism, by giving absolute powers to a group of people, you could have disastrous consequences like dictatorship.

2) Human history has been plagued (yeah, I dare to use that word!) by a sort of capitalist mindset from the beginning of Time. The only way we can undo the damage is by starting afresh, which we cant. What i mean is the following. Lets say we declare a communist world from this moment onwards. The guys who are below the average are going to be happy and the guys above the average are going to hate it. And the reason why we can never shift to communism is because the guys who are above the average are the guys who hold sway in the capitalist world

A lot of people say that communism will not work because there is no incentive for people to excel, because they are going to share the fruits of their labour anyway. Firstly I think thats one of the most selfish statements to make. That statement destroys in one stroke the rhetoric about "one world one people". Secondly, I admit that the industrially lethargic attitude is inevitable as you could see in communist russia. But I would attribute that to the fact that we have been so accustomed to the capitalist philosophy that it will always prevent us from understanding the beauty of communism. For example, if I am a successful industrialist and you declare the world communist ( ?!?!?! like you could...... but anyway!!), then I'll have to share my money with the smallest worker in my company. Of course I would be unhappy....... not because I dont have enough for myself but because I remember those capitalist days and think about how much more I could be earning.

How I wish we could erase all memory and start afresh in a communist world. Then you can remove one word from the dictionary................. GREED!

Hmm. I read all ur views. Very interesting indeed. Studying in the original KarlMarx University.. I wud say the following of what I knw and have experienced abt communism from the mouths of the ones who underwent it for more than a century.

What we know from the recent history is that communism became a violent evil that cast a huge shadow on the eastern europe. What we dont know is that communism prevailed even before .. as a theory of the 'learned'. The maximum followers of marxism/communism were Literate geniuses. This is the most important power of communism. It was the most rational idea ever to hav come up .. not by just anyone.. but by the most well-known thinkers of the world!

Capitalism.. didnt need any special thinking. All humans are born with the quality-greed. It is the sole drive for capitalism. "please urself.. and u end up pleasing the whole economy". Christianity based its idea on Bible (word of God). Socialism is just a less extreme version of Communism. But, communism was the first such idea that was provokin for a 'change' A change.. through stages. It proposed a 'new world'. It was the purest Man-made theory.. and no wonder it spread like fire back then.

So what went wrong? Let me tell u my way of lookin at it. Theory originally proposed by KarlMarx was worth a glance! It really was. But, what political systems of the Eastern Europe developed slowly became a more 'forced religion'. It was modified to bring power to the ones who were ruling! This is where it went wrong. It was interpreted wrong. Change is part of the system. But, change when forced wont work! And this is how the tight hold of the changes occuring in this system.. led to its own demise!

So do i support communism? no i support the idea that was proposed... its nothin less than evolution itself. But, what i dont support is the way it was IMPLEMENTED IN THE PAST GENERATION!

The general skepticism wud be.."well I feel its too much of a theory to succeed" Perhaps the theory in itself was not profound. But, since it was not implemented well..the end came sooner than we thought.(this explains the paranoia around the world specially in US)but, no.. if u just look around.. the world around u..right nowww.. it gives u proof that communism DID have elements of truth. What it predicted after a phase of capitalism and socialism.. was joining of world powers to form one big organization... (THE EU) which will soon reign its power.. will go back to the good ol dictatorship.. except that.. it is not called dictatorship anymore.. its called GLOBALISM!

This is quite an interesting topic. There are essentially 3 ways in which a country can be ruled - with democracy/capitalism, communism/socialism and autocracy.
Democracy works under the assumption that each human is interested in getting that does benefit him the most. So, in a democracy people do that which they feel is best for them and this is assumed to turn out to be good for society as a whole.
Communism works under the premise that humans should be given what they need and not what they want/deserve. If you are a farmer with a family of 4 you should be given more access to resources than say an extremely talented scientist who is not married. Though this is a very noble feeling, it doesn't work out because humans are wired to respond to reward. If reward is not directly correlated to effort the desire to work takes a nosedive. Thus there is not enough produced to be able to give appropriately.
In terms of democracy, I believe a certain educational cutoff is necessary to be able to vote. Though it might sound unfair, it would prevent jokers like Jayalalitha and Laloo Yadav from leverage the uneducated masses to get what they want. George Bush is doing something similar. Most of the votes come from the relatively more rural South and the spin he puts to them is very different from what he actually does. The NY/Chicago/Cal/Any well educated population things he is an idiot!

Was just looking at what I had written and realised that it was quite lame. Sorry to have outraged all you folk. I guess communism is too utopian to work.

But the point I was trying to drive at was that democracy has incredible flaws as well and I cant see why democracies have had and still continue to have a 'holier than thou' attitude towards other forms of government.

DplGngr.. I didnt think wat u wrote was 'Lame'. It isnt such an outrageous idea after all.. mayb living in sum democratic capitalist countries.. all this seems such a far thought. I sumhow feel living in the heart of post-communist countries.. makes me really question whether democracy will ever reach the core of the ppl's hearts here. :) I m really happyy u gav me a chance to express my views..(irrespective of it bein relevant to ur post or not)

Intern.. Lol!!! Seems we hav a warrior amidst us.. who will draw her sword at any weak sign of disturbance Hehe! I like tat spirit..:)touche awayyyy!

Jaysan I found ur reasonin very apt. As long as we hav more mouths to feed in a square area than we hav supplies available.. i think perfect utopia is ruled out.

Ramani.. ur ideas were captivating..(err..:P) Although i personally agree that situation was such in vast populated countries.. the chance for voting be restricted to a certain education decree holders, at the sametime i also think education brings along with it the importance for success, money and a perhaps selfish attitude of me=knows=it=all..Face it, education has given even some lousy ppl..way too much power than they shud deserve!

All elections r corrupted. First tackle that.. then automatically results will start changing.

[intern]{divster} Thanks a million for the moral support. Those were just friends trying to pull my leg....... or at least I'd like to think so!

Yossarian and Major Major Major Major...... Just a bit of the old war grumpiness eh?
Happy days are here again.

'tis a catch 22 situation indeed. Some people are happier when they are grumpier.

Brandy postulates that you've become twice as cynical as you were while in IIT, which is hard to believe because apparently you were already setting records on cynicism. What say you Topa?

Blogger doppelganger said...

That might be fairly accurate. I mean, in IIT I had seen Seinfeld which was a validation of my cynicism and pointless existence. I came here and saw Curb your Enthusiasm, and well............. I tend to curb my enthusiasm!

But Brandy really has no business talking about stuff like this. We were in this cynicism thing together. We thought it was cool until we saw all the others getting the chicks. Brandy is a &*$#ing traitor, while I am still staying loyal to the cause.

Hehe... did you know Brandy's hand went to my throat when I mispronounced his GF's name? Traitor's an understatement, don't you think?

Anyway... I shall desist from this irrelevant chatter... if I comment here again I'll ensure it's about your post.

[divster] That wasn't gossip. It was a bitter elegy to bygone friendship....... well, not really, i guess it was gossip! I feel so sick now!

[intern] Bad news is I did not understand your question, but good news is that it is a 'yes-no' question. So here I go -

NO - by which I mean I am not "antithetic to anything sardonic" which would mean... er.. hmm.. hmm...... Okay lets cut the crap. The real me is quite cynical but not enough to preclude hopeless hope.
